SkepSun #31 (03_24_2013)

On Freethought Radio, it’s bad news for the Good News Club. Listen to excerpts of the speech given before FFRF’s October 2012 convention in Portland, Oregon, by Katherine Stewart, journalist and author of The Good News Club: The Christian Right’s Stealth Assault on America’s Children. Also we’ll hear “One Sweet Morning,” a peace anthem heralding the spring, with lyrics by nontheistic songwriter Yip Harburg. Then I speak with Denise Handlarski, a humanist rabbinical candidate in Toronto who will be leading the Passover seder for Kol Haverim, Ithaca’s secular Jewish congregation.  I ask her what meaning Passover has for people who don’t believe in God. The rest of the show will focus on “alt med.”  First we hear Dr. Steve Novella discuss with the other Skeptics Guide rogues a kerfuffle he’s gotten into with the authors of a recent meta-analysis of acupuncture. Rounding out Skeptical Sunday is a talk by Harriet Hall, MD, aka “The SkepDoc,” a retired family physician and former Air Force flight surgeon from the 2012 World Skeptics Congress in Berlin titled “Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM): Fairy Tale Science and Placebo Medicine.”
