SkepSun #45 (06_30_2013)

Skeptical Sunday gets underway as it always does with Freethought Radio. This week Annie Laurie has the day off and Dan is flying solo. We’ll hear about immigration reform, the Boy Scouts of America ban on atheists, religious statues on public property and Dan will talk to Philosopher Daniel Dennett about his new book: Intuition Pumps and Other Tools for Thinking. Then when is “but it’s my religion!” not a good enough excuse?  We’ll hear an excerpt from the Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe in which ex-hasidic Jew Joshie Berger speaks out against the cruel and dangerous practices within certain communities in Brooklyn, NY.  After that, from the Reasonable Doubts podcast we hear an interview of former Christian minister John Loftus, promoter of the “outsider test for faith” which is to subject your beliefs to the same skepticism you apply to all those beliefs you don’t accept. Would your faith pass the outsider test?  Finally, to err is human, even if you’re one of the world’s greatest scientific minds. Chris Mooney interviews astrophysicist and science writer Mario Livio, author of the new book “Brilliant Blunders: From Darwin to Einstein, Colossal Mistakes By Great Scientists That Changed Our Understanding of Life and the Universe” on the Point of Inquiry podcast.
