SkepSun #109 (10_19_2014)

We’re talking extraterrestrials and UFOs on this Skeptical Sunday. Why do scientists take seriously the possibility of life on other planets, but the idea that aliens are visiting us in UFOs not so much? We’ll listen to a podcast produced for the true-believers out there…it’s called Podcast UFO hosted by Martin Willis.  Martin interviews and debates Dr. Seth Shostack about whether credible evidence that aliens might be visiting us.  Shostack is a Senior Astronomer at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California and is a host of SETI’s weekly radio show Big Picture Science that airs weekly on WRFI. Decide for yourself who’s more convincing,  the skeptic or the believer. Then, on this week’s Point of Inquiry, Dr. Steven J. Dick, the Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology, discusses progress that has been made in the search for extraterrestrial life with host Josh Zepps, and what the ramifications will be if and when we make the discovery that we are not alone. But first we get underway with Freethought Radio, the show produced by the Freedom From Religion Foundation. After updates from the frontlines of battle for the separation of state/church in South Dakota, Georgia, Ohio, and Oklahoma, Annie Laurie Gaylor and Dan Barker treat us to some remarks from science-fiction writer Ursula K. LeGuin, to Malala Yousafzai’s Nobel Peace Prize remarks, and talk with Bob Ripley, former pastor of the largest mainline Protestant church in Canada who resigned after discarding his faith; he has a new book out called Life Beyond Belief: A Preacher’s Deconversion.
